17. Snell Roundhand
Late in the seventeenth century, the English writing master, Charles Snell, decried all flourishes in the Puritan tradition and stood for a plain and efficient form of roundhand. The large x-height of these unadorned forms suited the purpose of the English roundhand, the standard commercial hand of the developing economic revolution, the typewriter face of its day. The overhangs on these letters were too large to cast in metal, blocking evolution to typography. Flourishes on the more elaborate forms could be adapted to fill body space, reducing or eliminating overhangs, allowing flourished scripts to appear in type. In 1966 Matthew Carter translated Snell’s script for photocomposition, later adding two more weights. With its large x-height and severely graceful texture, Snell, impossible in metal, appears as the most typographic of photocomposition scripts.

28. Maestro
Maestro takes its cue from the Italian chancery cursive of the early sixteenth century. By this time type ruled the publishing world, but official court documents were still presented in calligraphy, in a new formal style of the high Renaissance that was integrated with Roman letters and matched the refined order of type. The copybooks of Arrighi and others, printed from engraved wood blocks, spread the Italian cancellaresca across Europe, but the medium was too clumsy and the size too small to show what was really happening in the stroke. Arrighi and others also made metal fonts that pushed type in the direction of calligraphy, but again the medium did not support the superb artistry of these masters or sustain the vitality in their work. As the elegant sensitive moving stroke of the broad pen was reduced to a static outline, the human quality, the variety and the excitement of a living act were lost. Because the high level of skill could not be reproduced, the broad pen was largely replaced by the pointed tool. The modern italic handwriting revival is based on a simplified model and does not approach the level of this formal calligraphy with its relationship to the Roman forms.
29. Rundigsburg
Is Rundigsburg a calligraphic face morphing into sans serif or sans serif reverting back to a medieval, calligraphic face? The letters are angular and some retain traces of older letter forms, but the ornamentation is gone. Rundigsburg is decorative but also very legible, suitable for both display and some text purposes. The family has four weights, each with an italics style. There are two shadowed versions and each has an “inside” style designed for uses in layers with its shadowed style to add color. These “inside” style are similar to the light style but the spacing matches its shadowed complement. Among Rundigburgs OpenType features are a few basic fractions and some alternative letter forms.
