25 University Fonts that will Earn you Recognition

As a student of typography, you need to learn the difference between two different types of fonts that are often used by designers and publishers: The University Font and the School Font. Often, designers choose to use these terms interchangeably because both fonts can be used for printed and manuscript typeface design. A School Font, as its name suggests, is used by educational institutions while a University Font is more commonly used for commercial printing. However, despite their common names, these fonts have some specific differences that can help you differentiate between the two.

A School Font has a set of characteristics such as line space, stroke weight, and typeface family. Unlike a University Font which is based on the preset styles available in a computer program, a School Font must be created within the set of predetermined decisions made by a designer or a typist during the design process. The main features of a School Font include the usage of a flexible point size, standard or automatic italics, and an optional ragged line option. Though a school typeface may not be as aesthetically appealing as a university typeface, it creates a professional and elegant looking document.

A University Font, on the other hand, is usually created as a result of a specific project. For example, a University Font might be created for a thesis statement or a mission statement. This font is usually based on the typeface used for official business documents and press releases. The Open Sans typeface is the most commonly used typeface for web design; the reason for this is that it closely resembles the look and feel of Open Office, one of the most popular open source office applications.

The key thing to remember is that these types of font families are just that- fonts. They are used to set text apart from other content and convey a certain tone or mood. As such, it should be taken very seriously especially when used on a professional level. Some font providers are quite good at matching different styles and mixes but there is always room for experimentation.

There are many different font families out there and more coming out each day. What is important is to understand the purpose behind the creation of a font family before settling on one. Some font providers specialize in creating a few popular fonts while others offer a full selection of fonts suited for all kinds of needs. When it comes to fonts, you get what you pay for.

Since the release of these fonts most typefaces in the Scangraphic Type Collection appear in two versions. One is designed specifically for headline typesetting (SH: Scangraphic Headline Types) and one specifically for text typesetting (SB Scangraphic Bodytypes). The most obvious differentiation can be found in the spacing. That of the Bodytypes is adjusted for readability. That of the Headline Types is decidedly more narrow in order to do justice to the requirements of headline typesetting. The kerning tables, as well, have been individualized for each of these type varieties. In addition to the adjustment of spacing, there are also adjustments in the design. For the Bodytypes, fine spaces were created which prevented the smear effect on acute angles in small typesizes. For a number of Bodytypes, hairlines and serifs were thickened or the whole typeface was adjusted to meet the optical requirements for setting type in small sizes. For the German lower-case diacritical marks, all Headline Types complements contain alternative integrated accents which allow the compact setting of lower-case headlines.
